In a recent study, the Iowa Peer Workforce Collaborative (IPWC) found that work overload, less autonomy and fewer promotional opportunities are related to emotional exhaustion in Iowa's peer support workforce.

Study authors Abigail Heaton, Carol Coohey and Katelyn Akright found that more than 30 percent of Iowa’s peer support workers felt emotionally exhausted three or more times a month. Perceived work overload and reduced work autonomy were the strongest predictors of emotional exhaustion. Peer support workers who perceived more promotional opportunities were less emotionally exhausted.
